The Nintendo Entertainment System

Pressapoco tutte le generazioni di videogiochi e di videogiocatori erano rappresentate ma, mi ha colpito molto vedere tra i visitatori moltissime persone della mia eta’: la Nintendo Generation. Una categoria di persone abbastanza vecchia da ricordarsi l’Unione Sovietica e giovane abbastanza per essere padrona di Internet.

Una categoria di persone che e’ nata insieme ai videogiochi, che e’ cresciuta giocando al Commodor, all’Amiga, al Nintendo 8 bit e che potera’ sempre nel cuore quei 256 colori e quella grafica a quadratoni che da piccoli faceva sognare. La grafica era cosi’ astratta che il videogioco lo si doveva immaginare.

Ma proprio quello era in bello, quella musica elettronica, mai sentita prima, e quei meravigliosi quadratoni rossi che sono l’idraulico piu’ famoso del mondo entrato in ben 40 milioni^fonte di case alla sua prima impresa. Tanto e’ vero che le console disponibili per giocare erano prese d’assalto sia dagli appassionati ma anche da un nutrito numero di nuove leve che a giudicare dalla palpabile eccitazione gradivano l’esperienza.

Credo che l’esperienza videoludica della mia infanzia, di quando si soffiava nelle cassette e nella console se il gioco non partiva, sia stata la migliore della mia vita.

Qua di seguito un po’ di foto delle vecchie glorie che ho scovato alla fiera, incluso il Neo Geo CD a cui giocavo da bambino insieme ad un mio amico quando il fratello maggiore ce lo permetteva. Che invidia!

BlackBerry Storm 9500

Sono entrato in possesso dello stupefacente BlackBerry Storm 9500 l’anno scorso. Stupefacente perche’ probabilmente RIM e’ riuscita a creare il peggior telefono al mondo, si’ anche peggio del piu’ assurdo dei Samsung a conchiglia.

Solo ora pero’, dopo averlo avuto tra le mani per un anno e averlo abbandonato per la frustrazione dopo pochi mesi, ho deciso di condividere le mie impressioni d’uso.

Prima di entrare nel dettaglio premetto che questo “gioiello” e’ stato il mio primo contatto con il mondo BlackBerry. Data la qualita’ dell’esperienza, spero che sia anche l’ultimo.

Connetivita’: il BlackBerry Storm 9500 non e’ dotato di wi-fi. Ve lo sareste aspettato? Ben fatto per uno smartphone. Il Bluetooth presenta molte carenze, probabilmente imputabili al software. La comunicazione tra il mio Mac e il telefono risulta praticamente impossibile; trasferire una foto da o verso il dispositivo e’ una utopia costellata da errori di mancate autorizzazioni e servizi non disponibili.

Touch & Screen: sebbene lo schermo sia molto luminoso presenta delle macchie di luminosita’ piu’ intensa e delle zone dove una qual membrana sovrapposta allo schermo (no, non quella di plastica protettiva ma probabilmente la membrana sensitiva al tocco) deflette la luce dei pixel rivelandone le componenti R, G e B. La membrana stessa in alcuni punti, dopo pochi giorni di uso, si gonfia formando delle bolle d’aria soprattuto ai lati. La responsivita’ del touch screen capacitivo e’ carente se confrontata con l’iPhone. Lo schermo in se e’ un click screen sensitivo al tocco, muovendovi con le dita selezionate gli oggetti e premendo sullo schermo tali oggetti verrano attivati. L’idea e’ buona ma dopo un po’ stanca.

Interfaccia grafica & sistema di input: l’interfaccia grafica e’ sconclusionata, frammentaria e carente sotto vari aspetti. Inutile e fastidiosa, la barra che permette di nascondere la tastiera e muoversi nella schermata tramite pulsanti di scroll software sottrae pixel preziosi alle applicazioni. Che senso ha includere dei pulsati di scroll software quando il dispositivo permette di muoversi all’interno di una finestra grazie al touch screen? La grafica segue i comandi impartiti tramite touch screen lentamente e in ritardo. La velocita’ di aggiornamento della grafica a schermo e’ insoddisfacente e scattosa, probabilmente influenzata dalla pochezza del touch screen. La grafica in se dell’interfaccia e’ molto scarna, a tal punto da essere frustrante e difficile da interpretare: la visualizzazione degli sms la dice lunga. Una lista in formato CSV sarebbe probabilmente piu’ chiara. Opzioni nascoste qua e la’ nei menu’, qualche volta a schermo qualche volta sotterrate dietro al magico pulsante BlackBerry. Le tastiere a schermo (orizzontale e verticale) sono sufficientemente utilizzabili, per digitare e’ necessario premere sul tasto fino a sentire il click dello schermo.

Qualita’ del software: la qualita’ del software in generale ‘ scadente, tutte le applicazioni sembrano programmate con leggerezza e superficialita’ soprattuto nella presentazione grafica, probabilmente non dovuto alla pochezza dei programmatori ma bensi’ alla carente SDK. L’App Store e’ poco piu’ che una barzelletta con applicazioni costosissime e di dubbia qualita’. Per ogni applicazione sarete costretti firmare un accordo di licenza che vi viene presentato in una specie di pop-up. Dovrete scorrere l’intera licenza (esperienza non certo piacevole data la qualita’ sopra citata del touch screen) dato che i pulsanti accetto/non accetto sono situati al fondo della licenza stessa e non accessibili tramite menu’ contestuale. Durante l’aggiornamento di una applicazione gia’ presente sul telefono il sistema operativo vi informera’ un minimo di cinque volte durante l’installazione che l’applicativo che state installando e’ gia’ presente e aspettera’ la pressione del tasto ok per sapere se volete procedere o meno. Cinque volte. L’esperienza di navigazione del web con il browser integrato e’ grottesca.

Hardware: mi e’ capitato piu’ volte che inserendo e disinserendo le cuffie dopo aver ascoltato della musica, il sistema di output audio rimanesse impostato sull’uscita delle cuffie, rendendo impossibile di fatto telefonare. Il problema non si risolve spegnendo e riaccendendo il telefono, bisogna invece inserire e disinserire le cuffie piu’ e piu’ volte fino a quando un qualche switch hardware non si disincastra.

Ricezione: completamente a caso il telefono decide che e’ impossibile inviare o ricevere messaggi. Di punto in bianco non riceverete piu’ messaggi e non verrete avvisati del malfunzionamento. Se il malfunzionamento invece si verifica durante l’invio di un messaggio sarete costretti a estrarre la sim dal telefono, metterla in un altro telefono e rimetterla nel BlackBerry per risolvere il problema. Come questo sia possibile e come mai il metodo soprara citato sia la soluzione ancora io non me lo spiego.

Conclusione: Il telefono di smart non ha nulla, addirittura ascoltare un mp3 e’ una esperienza che a lungo andare diventa poco piacevole a causa dell’interfaccia grafica. Il telefono e’ scadente sotto molti aspetti, dalla qualita’ dei materiali di costruzione al software installato o disponibile da scaricare. I difetti hardware lo rendono terribile anche come puro telefono. Francamente trovo vergognoso che una azienda delle proporzioni di RIM proponga sul mercato un oggetto del genere. Ancora piu’ vergognosa e’ la commercializzazione da parte di Vodafone. Fortunatamente questo aborto tecnologico non mi e’ costato nulla avendolo preso tramite i punti della promozione Vodafone One.

L’unica tempesta paragonabile al dispositivo “Storm”, e’ una tempesta di merda che vi si scatenera’ addosso quando avendolo tra le mani vi renderete conto dei soldi che Vodafone e RIM si sono intascati. Imbarazzante.

Se recentemente avete provato ad accedere sotto rete 3 ai siti di Corriere della Sera e Repubblica ottimizzati per iPhone avrete sicuramente trovato un avviso simile a quello sulla destra. Quello che vedete e’ un paywall risultato degli accordi tra gli editori e il carrier H3G.

Se come me vi siete un po’ sorpresi del fatto, perche’ e’ un po’ come se Telecom Italia vi facesse pagare oltre alla sottoscrizione ADSL anche ogni singola pagina che visitate, c’e’ una economica soluzione per scavalcare il paywall. O almeno cosi’ mi sembra.

Il metodo descritto funziona solamente tramite iPhone, ma il principio e’ lo stesso per qualsiasi altro telefono.

Innanzi tutto vi dovete procurare una copia di Atomic Web Browser per il modico prezzo di 0.79 euro. Una volta ottenuto il nuovo e francamente portentoso browser potrete impostare il medesimo in modo che si identifichi come Safari Desktop e non come Safari Mobile. In questo modo otterrete la pagina standard dei due quotidiani.

Certo perderete il fascino della versione per dispositivi mobile ma eviterete di pagare 9 centesimi a pagina!

Update: anche utilizzando Opera Mini scaricabile gratuitamente e’ possibile scavalcare il paywall.

Via @sukkopera: C’è anche un’alternativa, totalmente gratuita, per chi ha un dispositivo jailbreakato: basta installare da Cydia lo UserAgent Faker, che farà sì che Safari si identifichi come Firefox su desktop!

Almost everything in this application is great and works perfectly… except direct messages. For some reason the conversations don’t show up, I even have notified Syncode via Twitter about this but I still haven’t received any answer.

Since the use I make of Twitter is mostly based on DMs this is pretty annoying for me. In a later post I will explain why my main use of Twitter is for DMs.

can not find them in the DOS. And God said – Who told you need

drivers? Did you run Windows?

And you will always sell Windows.

17. And God said to the User – Because of what you did, the Windows

will disappoint you and eat up all your Resources; and you will

have to use lousy programs; and you will always rely on the

Programmers help.

18. And God said to the Programmer – Because you listened to the

User you will never be happy. All your programs will have errors

and you will have to fix them and fix them to the end of time.

19. And God threw them out of the Data Center and locked the door

and secured it with a password.

20. GENERAL PROTECTION FAULT

The only thing to do was change it. Off I went to ifixit.com and I bought a new fan with a couple of other things also, a new battery and a new superdrive since mine failed to calibrate the laser power. The invoice was pretty expensive (107$ for shipping ARG)! Warning: This procedure voids the warranty.

So off we go with changing the fan. To open your MacBook Pro you’ll need a small cross screwdriver and a torx 6 screwdriver, while you’re there you’ll also might want to clean the other fan of just the inside with compressed air.

Open your mac by unscrewing the screws on the back, the bottom, the left side, the right side, the ones in the RAM compartment (torx 6 there) and the ones in the battery compartment towards the front of the mac. Once you unscrewed everything gently remove the top cover by inserting a flat head screwdriver in the gap between the body and the top panel and turn the screwdriver vertical, lift gently but don’t pull or you’ll break your keyboard. Disconnect the keyboard connector by lifting it before removing completely the top panel.

Now unscrew the screws circled in the picture below. Don’t remove the one on the right holding the speaker part together, just unscrew it. Remove the power supply cable of the fan by pushing is out (it’s a bit hard) and the connecting cable the crosses over the fan by lifting the two brown end, the cable will just slip out from underneath the ends.

It’s time to remove the yellow tape where needed and lift the other cables that cross over the fan. Now cut with a pen knife the black tape holding the fan to the air gird, it’s just need so the air doesn’t blow trough the gap. Lift the fan up and pull towards you, it’s a bit hard because the fan is glued to the floor, but don’t worry you won’t break anything keep pulling until it comes off.

You may now want to clean the air shaft before inserting the new fan as it gets cluttered bad with dust, use your compressed air for this.

Insert your new fan and put some black pate to cover the gap between the fan and the air shaft as it was when you opened your Mac. Screw back the part where the speaker is, connect the fan to the power and connect back the connecting cable removed before. 

And you’re done! That’s it! I will now continue explaining how to change the superdrive unit.

I assume your mac is open. Unscrew as shown in figure, then gently lift a bit and pull towards you. Gently so you don’t break the superdrive connector. Now unscrew from the old superdrive the metallic supports and screw them on the new unit.

 Screw everything back in palce and you’re done! Happy new mac!
